Rwenzori Mountains

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of Africa’s most spectacular mountain wilderness areas, located along Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering nearly 1,000 square kilometres, the park protects the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon, whose snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, glaciers, waterfalls, and unique vegetation create one of the world’s most extraordinary mountain ecosystems. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rwenzori Mountains National Park offers visitors an unforgettable adventure while showcasing one of Uganda’s most remarkable natural treasures.

The park is best known for its challenging multi-day mountain trekking expeditions to Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest summit, standing at 5,109 metres above sea level. Guided hikes pass through lush montane forests, bamboo zones, giant heather, lobelia, and giant groundsel vegetation found nowhere else on Earth. The park is equally rewarding for shorter nature walks, birdwatching, photography, and community experiences along the mountain foothills. More than 210 recorded bird species, numerous Albertine Rift endemics, colourful butterflies, and several primate species make the park an outstanding destination for Birding Safaris and Nature Safaris, while nearby Bakonzo communities offer authentic cultural experiences rooted in the mountains’ rich heritage.
