Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park is one of Uganda’s most distinctive protected areas, located on the floor of the western Albertine Rift Valley near Fort Portal and the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering approximately 220 square kilometres, the park protects the eastern extension of the vast Ituri Forest, one of Central Africa’s oldest tropical rainforests. Renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, unique lowland forest ecosystem, remarkable birdlife, and famous hot springs, Semuliki National Park offers visitors an opportunity to experience a different side of Uganda’s natural heritage while exploring one of the country’s least-visited wilderness destinations.

The park is best known for the spectacular Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling geothermal waters emerge from deep beneath the Earth’s surface and have long been associated with local cultural beliefs and traditions. Guided nature walks through the rainforest reveal towering mahogany trees, numerous primate species, colourful butterflies, reptiles, and more than 440 recorded bird species, making the park one of Uganda’s finest destinations for Birding Safaris. Visitors may encounter chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and forest elephants, while the surrounding region offers excellent opportunities for photography, community tourism, and exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Tooro Kingdom.
